Backcountry Access Companion Shovel and Probe

The new Companion Shovel and optional Probe system from Backcountry Access features an oval shaft and a compact six-foot probe which can be stored inside. Its oval design makes the Companion Shovel stronger in the shaft and in the blade, both aluminum.

BCA's short, lightweight Companion Probe is designed for the efficient pinpointing of buried companions within your own party. In this scenario, search speed is paramount; the chances of survival in a complete avalanche burial drop rapidly after 15 minutes. Probe length is less important, as less than two percent of avalanche victims buried more than six feet are found alive.

Another feature is the shovel's reversible offset grip. By shifting some of the upward angle from the blade ferrule to the grip, the blade becomes flatter and easier to pack. And if the shovel is worn on one's back, the grip can be reversed so it won't strike the back of the user's head.

The Life-Link IIIDX Shovel

Handles are 6000 Series black anodized aluminum aircraft tubing and are completely detachable from the blade by means of positive locking detents and feature molded ABS Black T Grip with two rectangular holes to allow shoulder strap attachment.
